Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Self-Care
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, also known as TMJ or TMD, is a painful and uncomfortable condition that affects the jaw joint. It is characterized by restricted or painful movement of the jaw. It is a complex condition that affects multiple parts of the body, notably the jaw, neck, and head. Common symptoms include difficulty or pain while chewing and yawning. Since this condition affects your everyday life, it’s important to understand Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction self-care so you can handle the pain at home while seeing a healthcare professional for TMJ treatment for longer lasting results.
Hot and Cold Compresses
Hot and cold compresses are a great and accessible option for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction self-care. Hot compresses are great for improving circulation and promoting jaw muscle relaxation. Cold compresses are successful in reducing inflammation and numbing pain. Both can relieve some of the pain associated with TMJ. Here are some tips on how to use hot and cold compresses:
- Hot Compress: A washcloth run under hot water, a hot water bottle, or a heat pack are great tools for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction self-care. Hold the hot compress to your jaw for twenty minutes. If you are using a washcloth, you may need to run it under hot water every few minutes to keep it hot. Make sure the compress is hot, but not too hot. Be careful to not burn your skin while using this tactic.
- Cold Compress: Wrap your cold or ice pack with a towel to protect your skin. Hold the cold compress to your jaw for ten to fifteen minutes and repeat every two hours as needed. Be sure to not hold the cold compress to your skin for over twenty minutes, as this can cause mild frostbite.
Diet Adjustments
Certain foods can make your TMJ symptoms worse, especially if it requires you to use your jaw more. Temporarily avoiding certain foods can help keep the pain manageable.
Avoid eating:
- Very hard and crunchy foods
- Overly chewy foods
- Big bites
Instead, try eating:
- Soups
- Pastas
- Cutting your food into smaller bites
